Perth Mode-Choice into the Brisbane Strategic Travel Model

When the BSTM modellers wanted to implement a mode-choice component, they investigated the mode-choice models used in other Australian cities and determined that the Perth model was most suitable for Brisbane. Two of the consultancies invited to do the work independently suggested the modellers approach us. We implemented the Perth model in two stages: applying the scripts to undertake the mode-choice calculations, and then analysing the data used for the mode-choice parameters.

The major challenge concerned the matrices. When the Perth mode-choice modules and BSTM macros were examined, it became clear that the existing BSTM matrices were being overwritten by the mode-choice calculations, producing strange results in the next loop. This was resolved by ensuring the matrices were not overwritten.

The Emme script and Excel workbook developed for this work are still used in running the BSTM today.
