This model was used to determine the optimal split of car and public transport users into the Parramatta CBD, the “second Sydney CBD” in the Sydney metropolitan area. We built the model in conjunction with Parramatta City Council: the Council owned the data and we owned the maths. Parramatta City Council purchased the Emme software licence, and we trained council staff to run the model in-house.
The model uses the incremental mode-choice approach outlined in Heinz Spiess’s paper on Incremental Logit Demand Functions, with future car demand constrained by the available parking spaces in each zone. The model received good reviews from RMS technical staff, and many in-house studies have since been undertaken using it, often with our assistance on the more technical aspects.

Implemented the Perth mode-choice model into the Brisbane Strategic Travel Model, resolving a matrix overwrite issue; the scripts built are still in use.
Analysed short car trips by travel purpose for a part of Sydney to identify the potential mode-shift to walking and cycling, as a starting point for planning.
Tell us what you are trying to decide, and we will tell you whether a model is the right way to decide it.
