Median Treatment Study — Wagga Wagga

We designed, developed, and implemented the Wagga Wagga Traffic Model, jointly owned by Wagga Wagga City Council and the RTA, and then used the model to analyse a potential median treatment on the Sturt Highway.

The median treatment would improve highway flow — particularly important for truck movements in the surrounding rural areas — but was also seen as restricting north–south movements. Winners and losers were identified, both in quantum and in geographical location, and cost–benefit analyses were undertaken.

The treatment involved banning right-hand turning movements onto the Sturt Highway, which bisects the city of Wagga Wagga. The study divided the highway into four sections and analysed each according to its expected implementation timing, individually and in combination, to determine the effect of the closures on traffic in the 2020, 2030, and 2040 networks.
