Bus Priority Scheme — Macquarie Centre Queue Jump

In Sydney, around nine regional centres require buses to take on a more prominent role because the roads accessing them have limited capacity. One option is to give buses higher priority entering these centres. The task was to develop a model to test a bus queue jump scheme.

The Macquarie Centre area was selected for its high bus movements. A bus queue jump was coded into the Dynameq network and the benefits evaluated, testing a six-second queue jump phase for buses.

The results showed a slight increase in Vehicle Hours Travelled and Vehicle Kilometres Travelled, expected from the additional cycle time; a slight but not statistically significant reduction in bus travel time; and a very significant reduction in the standard deviation of bus travel times, making the queue jump especially desirable.
